What we keep, and what we don’t.

Who we are
ABC (“Arianna’s Book Club”) is a private, invitation-only network for people who read together. We’re a small team and we care about keeping things simple, including what we do with your data.
What we collect
When you request an introduction or accept one, we collect:
- Your name and email address
- A password (stored only as a hashed value; we never see the original)
- Optionally, your city, a note about who introduced you, and a short list of favorite books
When you use the product, we also store:
- The chapters you belong to and your role in each
- Posts you write, RSVPs you submit, spread items you claim, votes you cast, and books you add to your shelf
- The invitations you create or redeem
We do not run analytics, ad trackers, or third-party pixels. Session cookies are used only to keep you signed in.
How we use it
Your information is used to run the product you signed up for — to show you your chapters, display your posts to other members of those chapters, surface what other clubs in the network are reading, and send you the invitations you create. That’s it.
Who sees it
Members of your chapter see:
- Your name and what you’ve posted, voted for, or RSVP’d to
- Your public profile (favorite books and club memberships you’ve chosen to make discoverable)
Outside the chapter, your public profile shows only what you’ve chosen to display. We don’t sell data or share it with advertisers.
We share information with service providers we rely on:
- Our hosting provider (Vercel) receives network logs as part of serving requests
- Our database is stored with a Postgres provider (Neon or similar)
- Book search queries you type are proxied through our server to Google Books and Open Library so we can fetch cover images and metadata
Cookies
We set a single session cookie when you sign in, so the site knows it’s you. We don’t use tracking cookies, and we don’t need a cookie banner because we don’t do anything that requires one.
Your rights
You can see everything tied to your account by visiting your profile and shelf. You can edit your favorites, remove books from your shelf, and delete your own posts at any time.
If you want to delete your account or request a copy of your data, email us (see Contactbelow) and we’ll handle it within 30 days. Members in the EU/UK, California, and other jurisdictions with specific privacy laws have additional rights (access, correction, deletion, portability, objection to processing) — the same email is the right place to exercise them.
How long we keep it
Your account and its associated content stay with us until you ask us to delete them. If you’re removed from a chapter, your posts and votes from that chapter stay in the club record — discussion has standalone value, and we don’t let one removal erase months of history for everyone else. Individual posts can be deleted by you or by a chapter organizer.
Security
Passwords are hashed with bcrypt. Traffic to the site is encrypted with HTTPS. Access to the database is restricted to the service itself. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect what you entrust to us.
Children
ABC is not intended for anyone under 16. We don’t knowingly collect information from children. If you’re a parent and think your child has signed up, please contact us and we’ll remove the account.
Changes
If we materially change how we handle your data, we’ll update this page and notify members by email. The last-updated date at the top of this page is the canonical reference.
